Transforming the smart home experience: developing the MVP mobile app for Buster + Punch

Buster + Punch are a high-end home fashion label. With the introduction of new smart products – such as bulbs, switches, and controllers – users required a Smart Home App to control these devices.

The challenge:

Buster and Punch approached Elemental to work alongside their small in-house team (of 1) to transform their Smart Home Mobile App prototype into the first version (MVP). At this point, they had already spent considerable time investigating how to structure the Smart Home App architecture. Still, they needed strategic input, product consultancy and software development to bring it to life as a working product.

Our approach:

  • Phase 1: We embarked on a product discovery phase with the client to map out the requirements for the MVP, undertook a review of the proposed architecture and undertook a UX/UI review of the current prototype designs.
  • Phase 2: Proposed a revised architecture using Flutter whilst continuing to leverage TUYA Lighting SDK (as selected by the client) to provide the backend to the application, and carried out several technical POCs to demonstrate how Flutter could deliver certain drag and drop functionality without the need for customisation.
  • Phase 3: Revising the mobile app designs to reflect the mapped user journeys and specific client design requirements, whilst also accommodating the technical specifications for the build.

The result:

A mobile app built working in two week sprints in close collaboration with the client. The Buster and Punch Architect maintained responsibility for investigation and design to accommodate the TUYA API. At the same time, the Elemental Concept team took responsibility for the front-end architecture design and build.
