Revolutionising litigation funding: using AI to streamline case selection

A leading legal technology provider wanted to streamline the litigation funding pipeline by developing a screening tool for lawyers. Its purpose was to quickly assess case validity and accelerate early-stage review.

The challenge

Lawyers needed a way to reduce the time spent on manual early case assessments while ensuring key risks and case merits were consistently identified.

Our approach

We began by running workshops with lawyers to map the early case selection steps they take when assessing potential claims. These steps were translated into a decision tree that mirrored their real-world assessment process.

From there, we built a proof-of-concept algorithm that combined Optical Character Recognition (OCR), Natural Language Processing (NLP), and rules-based logic to extract key information and highlight risks in contracts. To make the tool usable in practice, we developed a front-end application where lawyers could input case details and instantly receive risk flags and insights.

The results

The engagement delivered a working prototype that successfully replicates lawyer case-screening logic and automates the identification of risks tied to parties and specific contract clauses. By accelerating the initial review process, the tool helps lawyers focus on higher-value tasks, speeds up funding decisions, and ensures assessments are more consistent and scalable across cases.
