Navigating Legacy and Innovation: Supporting A Cloud Transformation Journey

Members of the Elemental Concept team began working with our Client in the early 2000s, initially providing ad-hoc consultancy services around their open-source technologies. Over time, these services expanded to include the replacement of their e-commerce offering with a modular e-commerce platform. The platform was written in Java, utilising a JBoss Application Server and an Oracle relational database, and integrated with multiple legacy ERP systems.

By 2015, we had helped to recruit and train an in-house team to take over the operation and extend the platform.

Today, our Client is re-platforming their e-commerce to adopt modern “cloud native” technologies. The new cloud platform is now responsible for a significant percentage of customer interactions; however, the original Java platform is still the foundation of the e-commerce channel, providing additional complex functionality that is highly valued by some larger customers and has not yet been implemented in the cloud.

The Elemental Concept team has been engaged to augment their in-house development capability by taking on responsibility for supporting the Java Monolith platform and implementing critical features, whilst their in-house team focuses on implementing the new platform.

This is a challenging request, given that the platform has been evolving for nearly 20 years, resulting in a significant amount of technical debt in the codebase.

We’ve built a hybrid UK/India team to support our Client over a long-term engagement, providing ongoing platform support while also adding new features and assisting with the organised decommissioning of the platform as more responsibilities are completely managed within the cloud platform.
